Abbeyglen Castle Hotel
Set along the picturesque Sky Road, overlooking the charming Connemara village of Clifden, The Abbeyglen Castle is a small, exclusive 4 star hotel, providing guests with a superior standard of accommodations, delightful cuisine and professional service.
Set in a lavish parkland valley above Clifden, Abbeyglen Castle is stately family run hotel with a blend of historical and modern. Built in 1832 by John d'Arcy of Clifden Castle, 33 years before Mitchell Henry built Kylemore Abbey in 1865. D'Arcy, who founded Clifden in 1812, was considered a leader of the community and was frequently consulted by the local constabulary in time of trouble or unrest. Over the next 150 years the property changed hands several times before being purchased in 1969 by the Hughes family, who've methodically restored the castle and gardens to their present state. Managing director Brian Hughes is a gracious host and skilled musician, who often leads guests in song around the piano.
Abbeyglen offers guests 38 rooms, including 18 superior suites. Each are tastefully decorated and fully appointed, with the full range of amenities you'd expect of a four star hotel. What sets Abbeyglen apart are the commanding views of its lavish, well maintained grounds and beyond that quaint Clifden, the sea and Connemara mountains. Abbeyglen is a hotel with great spirit. Whether its the complimentary afternoon tea or the late night sing songs around the piano, Abbeyglen has made many friends over the years, as witnessed by the high level of returning guests.
Abbeyglen Restaurant is renowned for its gourmet food and fine wines. With its elevated position overlooking the gardens, the menu features a variety of locally caught seafood and well-stocked aquarium of lovely shellfish, traditional Connemara lamb, and beef. All tastes are catered for and Abbeyglen staff are happy to prepare any fish caught by guests.
