Beara Head Cycle Route

Allihies, Co. Cork

Set along the most southerly tip of the Beara Peninsula this cycle route, from Eyeries to Castletownbere, is one of the most beautiful and memorable trips along the Beara Peninsula. The 30-mile route begins in Eyeries, loops around the south of the peninsula to the historical village of Allihies and finishes in the bustling town of Castletownbere. You'll be inspired by breathtaking coastal scenery, majestic mountain views, wild seascapes, an old copper mining village and pristine sandy beaches.

After leaving the charming village of Eyeries you will soon come to a junction in the road where you turn right onto the R575 towards the village of Allihies. These quiet meandering roads are the hidden gems of the Beara Peninsula and its best kept secret. You can really feel like you are away from it all and experiencing an undiscovered part of Irelands west. Its a fantastic ride with plenty of photo opportunities along the way as you cycle around the south of the peninsula. Lunch can be sought in the former copper mining village of Allihies against the backdrop of the dramatic Slieve Miskishs mountains and a refreshing dip in the Atlantic can wake up some tired muscles at the villages sandy beach.

Continuing along your journey there is the option of detouring off the main route and cycling a scenic 8kms stretch of road to reach the crossing for Dursey Island. You will have to depart with your bike here if you want to catch a ride to the island in the Dursey Island Cable Car, the only one in Ireland!

After returning to the main road continue along for a couple of kms before taking a right for the Dzogchen Beara Retreat Centre perched on top of a cliff. Even if you arent here for a retreat it is well worth the 5-minute spin from the main road as the views are out of this world! There is also a caf and shop. As well as a retreat centre, good buddhists run a hostel, should you want a peaceful escape for the night. Otherwise, its about 8 kms along a mostly downhill stretch to the lively coastal fishing town of Castletownbere, which has scores of accommodations, as well as a legendary pub, should you fancy a creamy pint after one of the most epic of all cycling routes.
