Beara South Cycle Route

Glengarriff, Co. Cork

The Beara South route, from Castletownbere to Gougane Barra, is set along the picturesque shores of Bantry Bay passing through the small welcoming villages of Ardigole and Glengariff before heading inland to the historical lakeside retreat of Gougene Barra. Although long in length, the 44-miles is a moderate cycle and highlights include historical castles, horticultural delights and ancient standing stones.

From the town of Castletownbere head east along the shores of Bantry Bay, one of Europes deepest natural harbours. You will quickly find yourself enjoying the fine view of Bear Island from your saddle as you cycle along the Bay towards the quiet village of Adrigole. Once in the village turn left onto the R574, travel north for about a kilometre and take a right turn following the signs for the Beara cycle route. This takes cyclists onto a quiet back road, which offers endless archaeological heritage sites and presents a real opportunity to explore the ancient Ireland of the past. After about 8kms, cyclists will join the R572 again and travel towards the cute village of Glengariff. Here, there is an opportunity to explore Glengariff Nature Reserve, about 1 km up the N71 Kenmare road. Alternatively, you can hop across to take in the horticultural delights of Garnish Island.

Leaving Glengariff, continue along the busy N71 route towards the village of Ballylickey, just a few kmbefore heading inland, turning onto the well-signed R584 towards Gougane Barra. Just before the village of Kealkill and well worth exploring is the site of the historical Carriganass Castle which was built by the OSullivan Beare Chieftain, Dermot O Sullivan in 1540. Continue cycling along the R584 enjoying the rolling hills dotted with sheep and cattle and the endless chorus of bird song. There is the thrill of a sweeping descent before taking a left turn off the main road towards the beautiful surrounds of Gougane Barra.

This spectacular mountain valley of Gougane Barra is legendary for its serenity and scenic beauty. And with the friendly, family-run 3 star Gougane Barra Hotel makes for a fabulous, well-earned reward to the day's cycle. With excellent dinners and a small, atmospheric pub, its the perfect place to unwind after a long-day on the road.
