Bogs and Bays Cycle Route
The Bogs and Bays Cycle Route, from Rossaveal to Roundstone, is set amongst the backdrop of the mighty Maem Turk and Twelve Ben mountain ranges and is one of the most beautiful and isolated cycle highways that Ireland has to offer.
This 35km moderate ride starts at the ferry port of Rossaveal, heads north for about 10km towards Scrib before travelling west through open bog land towards the small fishing village of Roundstone. Highlights include breathtaking mountain scenery, wild and remote bog roads, traditional cottages and beautiful sandy beaches.
Leaving the port of Rossaveal proceed towards the R336. Turn left when you arrive at this T-junction before taking the next right for Maem Cross. Here, the surrounding land becomes harsher and rockier as the impressive Maem Turks and Twelve Bens come into sight for the first time. On meeting the village of Scrib, which is about 10km up this road, one should turn left onto the R340. Located 4km down this road is a small whitewashed cottage where the revolutionary and writer Pagraig Pearse once resided and is well worth a visit.
Continue cycling along this road towards the village of Cashel enjoying the wild delights of Connamara and its rugged bog land. A well earned lunch can be sought at the local hotel, which is set amongst the tranquil Cashel Bay, before travelling onwards along the meandering coastal road towards Toombeola, Tomb of Beola and the site of an ancient Abbey. It�s a 6km spin from here into the picturesque fishing village of Roundstone, famous for its craft shops, lively pubs, and relaxed atmosphere.
