Poolbeg Walk

Dublin 4, Dublin

Poolbeg Walk takes in a seaside route along the sea in South Dublin. The walk, following the Great South Wall, serves up fresh sea breezes and poignant lessons in Irish history. First built in 1777, the Great South Wall was once the longest sea wall in the world. Here you can amble in close proximity to the ships departing and arriving from Dublins busy port and enjoy the open sea lapping at the base of the wall. Along the walk, you can take in remains of the old Pigoen-House Fort. With its mounted cannon, the fort serves as a reminder that the site served as a British garrison from 1798 until 1897. It was the final point of retreat and refuge in the event of a successful Irish rebellion. A navy frigate was always on duty to evacuate the British administration as a last resort.
