The Western Way - Lackavrea Section
Easily accessible from Galway, the Lackavrea Section of the Western Way comes as a great surprise and pleasure, revealing stunning views of Lough Corrib and delivering you into the heart of Wild Connemara.
Broadly speaking the trail connects Oughterard with Maam. Starting from the car park at the end of the road, the trail meanders along the shores of Lough Corrib, following along old mining and forest roads, in and out of the forests, revealing spectacular views of Lough Corrib and the mountains beyond.
It is at this breakpoint of the trail, bisected in the middle by a Forest Road, where the trail turns into a footpath, heads westward into Lackavrea Forest, a reserve managed by Coillte. To the West lies Maam Cross and Leenaun, to the east lies the road leading to Oughterard.
The Lackavrea Section of the Western Way offers up several highlights. Foremost are the stunning views of Lough Corrib and the mountains of Connemara. Also noteworthy is the 4km section of bog bridge trail that provides a welcome respite from the more typical bog slog. The Trail also reveals quality sections of riparian habitat as it follows along the Folore River. And you certainly get the sense that you're in the heart of Wild Connemara, without investing too much effort.
Whether you're a hiker or fisherman, those who ventures into Lackavrea will be rewarded by magnificent views, good fishing, solitude and peace. This is a fairly gentle and pleasant walk, with little elevation gain. Minimal pain, maximum pleasure!
However walkers should be prepared for adversities of rain, wet bog, and midges.
