The Organic Centre
Set on 19 acre farm amid the pastural beauty of County Leitrim close to Lough Melvin, the Organic Centre was established in 1995 as a non profit making company, the aim of this centre is providing training, information and demonstrations of organic gardening, growing and farming. The Organic Centre has runs outreach centres in Co. Clare and Co. Wicklow.
The primary aim of the Organic Centre is to show how organic food can be grown by everyone, using organic methods that work in harmony with nature. Our organic demonstration gardens are located on 19 acres within the beautiful Leitrim countryside,
Throughout the year the Organic Centre hosts numerous workshops spanning a variety of topics pertaining to organic growing and green living, including horticulture, gardening, green building, alternative energy, and artisan food production. Many of their courses are held over a weekend, but the Organic Centre also provides an intensive, year long training programme in organic horticulture.
Passers by are encouraged to visit the Organic Centre is recognized as an eco-tourism destination. You are invited to wander among the Organic Demonstration gardens, that include various polytunnels, an orchard & soft fruit area featuring numerous heritage varieties unique to Ireland, a herb garden with a large variety of culinary and medicinal herbs,
Guests to the Organic Centre may wish to partake in a unique dining experience at the Grass Roots Cafe, utilizes fresh seasonal organic produce from their gardens, combined into a medley of fresh and interesting dishes that changes daily. The Café also hosts a weekly ‘béile gaeilge’ or Irish speaking lunch, every Tuesday, welcoming Irish speakers of all abilities.
The Organic Centre also runs an Eco-shop stocks a range of eco-friendly and ethical products for home and garden, including books, garden tools, organic seeds, seasonal organic vegetables, and freshly baked organic bread & cakes, fair-trade products, toys, toiletries, and household items.
If You Go: The Organic Centre is open year round and The Grass Roof Organic Cafe is open daily from 11am to 4pm.
