Magilligan Point Nature Reserve
Located on the North West corner of Northern Ireland, Magilligan Point Nature Reserve is comprised of an expansive stretch of sand dunes that stretch from Downhill to Magilligan Point, close to County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland.
Magilligan is Ireland’s largest coastal sand dune accumulation, comprising 32 square kilometres of marine and wind-blown sand deposits. Magilligan’s sand dunes are dynamic and ever changing, providing a rich tapestry of landscapes and abundant ecological values. Because of the ecological importance, Magilligan Point has been established and protected as a Nature Reserve. Magilligan Point is a great place to walk, especially for visitors who’re passing from Donegal to the Giant’s Causeway. Birdwatching is a popular activity at Magilligan. Magilligan Point also contains significant historical features. The Magilligan Martello tower was built during the Napoleanic wars circa 1812 and is one of the most northerly of the towers built around the coasts of Ireland.
