Lismore Castle Gardens

Set on seven acres within the outer defense walls with spectacular views of a castle originally built in 1185, Lismore Castle Gardens are believed to be the oldest in Ireland. Lismore gardens retain much of their original Jacobean form. Not only is Lismore visually impressive, it also exudes an extensive history that spans across hundreds of years. Prince John built the original castle in 1185. The Estate was granted for a time to Sir Walter Raleigh for a rent of �12 p.a. The castle has changed hands several times over the years. Much of the impressive present castle was built in mid-19th century and is now the Irish home of the Duke of Devonshire. The gardens surrounding the castle certainly have a timeless feel. There is also a fine selection of magnolias, camellias, rhododendrons and a remarkable yew walk where Edmund Spenser is said to have written the "Faerie Queen". The two gardens are delightfully linked by the staircase to the Riding House built in 1631.

Despite its rich history, Lismore Castle Gardens continues to reinvent and renew itself. A recently planted herbaceous border aligned on the Cathedral�s spire gives an inpressive show of colour throughout the summer months. In 1998 several pieces of contemporary sculpture were installed in the garden. The West Wing of Lismore Castle has been converted into a contemporary art space, providing an an added attraction for the gardens and included in the admission charge. Lismore Castle hosts at least one art exhibition every year, with an emphasis on excellence.
