Castle Ward

Set outside of Downpatrick in Co. Down, Castle Ward is a superb, 18th-century Georgian mansion famed for its mixture of architectural styles, with an 820-acre walled demesne and Strangford Lough Wildlife Centre.

Castle Ward is a superb Georgian house with both Classical and Gothic facades and interiors, overlooking a lush and sprawling estate with breathtaking views over Strangford Lough. Home of the Ward family since the 16th century, Castle Ward is a quirky mid-Georgian mansion that is an architectural curiosity, it is built inside and out in the distinctly different styles of classical and gothic.

Castle Ward is also known for its 820-acre walled demesne dramatically set overlooking Strangford Lough. Guests to Castle Ward can enjoy several delightful walks through mature parklands, woodlands and lough shore areas. Castle Ward’s grounds are well worth a visit in Spring for acres of bluebells and Autumn for fungi and other flora and fauna. Other notable features include Temple Water, a man-made pleasure lake and the old farm yard with seventeenth century keep.

Strangford Lough Wildlife Centre is also located within the estate, providing an insight into life in and around Strangford Lough. Also on site is a new adventure playground, children’s play area, second-hand bookshop, Victorian Laundry, water driven cornmill and other farm buildings. Children can dress up and play with period toys in the Victorian Past Times Centre or learn about local wildlife at the Strangford Lough Wildlife Centre.

The grounds of Castle Ward also includes a caravan site and holiday cottages.
