Gougane Barra

Set among the Derrynesaggart Mountains outside Bantry in West Cork and covering some 254 hectares of forest, open woodland and mountains, Majestically in repose in a narrow valley, flanked by precipitous mountains carved by glaciers, the much photographed lake at Gougane is an extremely popular destination, who're magnetically drawn to the picturesque Chapel.

Few visitors to this site appreciate that Gougane Barra is also a designated National Park, a place that holds superb ecological and heritage values. Opened to the public in 1966, Gougane Barra was named as Ireland's first national park. More than just a scenic hotspot, the valley of Gougane Barra is a haven for wildlife, supporting a diversity of wildlife species including deer, badgers, foxes, stoats, and even the occasional pine marten can be spotted.

Visitors to the valley are well served to spend time exploring the monastic ruins of St. Finbarr. The small island on which the chapel is set was the site of a 7th Century monastery, founded by St. Finbarr, a native of the locality. Remnants of the monastery buildings can still be seen on the site, as well as an open aired court, where eight small circular cells surrounding a centre wooden cross. It is here where a pilgrimage is still held every Sept in honour of St. Finbarr.

Gougane Barra is also a fabulous place to walk. Numerous walking routes through the National Park allow walkers of all experience levels to access magnificent views of the lakeshore, mountains, forestland and wilderness.
