Woodbrook House
Set on a scenic demesne overlooking the Blackstairs Mountains in Co. Wexford, Woodbrook House is a fine country house and family home dating to 1770’s that provides accommodation in three guest rooms.
Woodbrook is a fine country house, originally built in the 1770’s. Badly damaged during the 1798 Rebellion, Woodbrook was subsequently rebuilt anew. Spacious and welcoming, Woodbrook is an interesting work of architecture, a Regency house with huge Wyatt windows, high ceilings, a fabulous large drawing room, and a spectacular and unusual, 19th century 'flying' spiral staircase rising to the first floor in a great open swirl. Woodbrook is full of such craftsmanship that make it a very interesting house to stay in.
Woodbrook House and grounds has been restored to its former glory by the FitzHerbert family, who’ve moved into Woodbrook in 1998 and made it their family home. As a result of this fine work, Woodbrook House has been opened as an elegant and charming country house.
Giles, a former ambassador, and his wife Alexandra are gracious hosts well accustomed to entertaining guests. Alexandra is an excellent cook; the walled garden provides her with fresh seasonal vegetables and the hens with fresh eggs every day. Therefore dining is a real treat at Woodbrook House, whether enjoying their sumptuous breakfasts or dinners by arrangement.
Never resting on laurels, Woodbrook House continues to evolve. Recently the FitzHerberts embarked on a path of sustainability. In 2006 Woodbrook went green. The hot water is now heated by solar panels, the central heating boiler burns wood pellets and the family car runs on 100% biofuel made from Irish grown rapeseed.
Guests to Woodbrook House will enjoy wandering the fine demesne, with the Blackstairs Mountains as a backdrop. Guests can wander in the woods or play on the newly re-sown grass tennis court beside the house. Also nearby to Woodbrook House are wonderful mountain walks in the Blackstairs, Slieve Ban, and along Mount Leinster. There is salmon fishing on the River Slaney at nearby Bunclody and trout fishing in several local streams. Each summer there is usually a first class opera production, either in the garden at Woodbrook House or in one of the other country houses in the neighbourhood.
