Sea Creatures - Blow Holes
On Inis Mor, near the village of Gort na gCapall on the south side of the island you will find Poll na BPeist, a spectacular blow-hole created by the sea putting enormous pressure on the roof of a cave initially formed beneath it and the legendary haunt of a sea monster. It is quite dangerous to get close to so caution is urged. Its name is probably derived from the terrifying sounds that issue forth from the blow-hole in stormy weather, when the sea hisses and roars through the fissures in the rocks but possibly deriving from something far more elusive as stories of Capall fharraige, the Irish for sea-horse, abound in Aran mythology. Something that is reflected in the stories of Connemara of a lake residing creature known as a capall uisce in Irish, or horse-eel.
