Muxnaw Lodge B&B

Kenmare, Co. Kerry

Set among a three acre wooded garden on a hillside overlooking Kenmare Bay, Muxnaw Lodge B&B provides inexpensive charming accommodation in five en suite guest rooms of gabled Victorian house, just five minutes walk from Kenmare town.

The house was built in 1801 as a summer hunting and fishing residence for the Calverley family, the owners of Dublin's Clontarf Castle. It was converted to a guesthouse by the current occupiers, the Boland family. Hannah and Vincent epitomize Irish hospitality, and have been operating Muxnaw Lodge for nearly 30 years.

Muxnaw Lodge includes five spacious guest rooms, of varying styles, some with views of Kenmare River and bridge. All rooms are en suite and come equipped with televisions and tea and coffee making facilities. Guests also have access to a sitting lounge, and can watch television, browse the extensive reading materials or sit and enjoy the view. The house has been decorated with careful attention to detail and includes many period antiques. The house is full of historic character, paintings, grandfather clocks, even pull chords in each room attached to an original bell-ringing system, designed for the original occupants to summons staff. The bells still function, so pull at your peril, lest Hannah will come running.

Breakfasts, taken alongside a crackling fire, are wholesome and delicious, featuring a full menu as well as Hannah's fresh preserves and homemade brown bread.

Muxnaw Lodge takes it's name from the Gaelic "Snamh an muc" - swim of the pigs. The area was where farmers would swim their pigs across the river on their way to market in Kenmare. Muxnaw Lodge sits at the foot of Muxnaw Mountain. Take a left at the drive and you're heading into the Wilds of the Beara Peninsula, while a right turn will take you on a five minute walk along a footpath over the suspension bridge and into the heart of Kenmare.
