Derreen Garden
Set on the spectacular Beara Peninsula just 24 km outside of Kenmare, Derreen is a beautiful woodland garden known for its great variety of plants, including tree ferns, Dicksonia antarctica. Azaleas and rhododendrons: both the tender Maddenii and Sinogrande are to be found. Among the original plantings are Arboreum Rhododendrons, some rising as high as 60 feet. This woodland garden was designed in the 1870s, planted by the 5th Marquess of Lansdowne. It is now owned and managed by his great great grandson Charlie Bigham and his wife Claire. Despite its rich history, Derreen Gardens continues to evolve. New planting is continuing all the time and recently two new ponds have been created.
If you're traveling along the Beara Peninsula, Derreen Gardens is well worth a visit. The setting is truly spectacular, with magnificent views across Kilmackillogue harbour to the Caha mountains from several points in the garden.
