Clare Island Ferries
Climb aboard the "Pirate Queen" and set sail for one of the most spectacular of islands off the West Coast of Ireland. Named after the infamous 16th century pirate queen Grace O'Malley, the Pirate Queen is a large and modern vessel registered with the Department of the Marine and Failte Ireland, carrying 96 passengers and 4 crew members. The Clare Island Ferry Company is owned and operated by the O?Grady family, natives of Clare Island who've been operating Clare Island's Mail Boat Ferry since 1880.
The Pirate Queen is a comfortable, sea worthy vessel. Whether inside the heated lounge or on the upper sun deck, passengers will enjoy the fifteen minute sail up the Clew Bay coastline, from Roonagh Quay (west of Louisburgh) to Clare Island: just enough time to take in this spectacular landscape of mountains, Croagh Patrick and the Nephin Range, islands, and the sea.
The O?Grady?s also operate a smaller ferry boat, the ?Very Likely?, which caters for 12 passengers and 2 crew. This boat may be chartered for small groups for sightseeing trips around Clare Island or trips to other islands such as Inishturk or Achill.
If You Go: The Clare Island Ferry provides year round service between Roonagh Quay and Clare Island. During May, June, & Sept, there are four sailings (09.30, 11.00, 14.00, 17.30).
