Ballintubber Abbey
Located in a pastural setting just seven miles south of Castlebar in County Mayo, Ballintubber Abbey is the oldest church in Ireland, having been a continuous place of worship since 1216 AD.
When St Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland in c.441AD, he founded a church in Ballintubber. The present Abbey founded by King Cathal O'Connor in 1216, the oldest church still in existence and the only church that can claim the distinction of actually being founded by an Irish King.
Ballintubber Abbey served as a vital place of worship throughout the centuries. People flocked from the east on their way to Croagh Patrick, Ireland's Holy Mountain on the west coast. Ballintubber Abbey is steeped in history. There's a large section of the 15th Century Cloister which was a sheltered walkway and place of prayer for the monks. St Patrick's Well where it is claimed that St Patrick baptised people in 441AD. An elegant bronze statue has been recently been erected depicting an image of St Patrick about to baptise pilgrims at the well.
Ballintubber Abbey is a simple yet beautiful structure. Constructed entirely of wood, with a shingled roof, Ballintubber is a a replica of the church built in 441A.D when St Patrick came to Ballintubber. It remains a highly popular venue for weddings, as well as a vital place of worship for local residents and visitors alike.
If You Go: Ballintubber Abbey is open daily from 9am to 12 midnight. Guided tours are available between May and September 10am to 6pm or by appointment.
