Ireland's Farmers Markets Thriving

Dozens of markets sell local produce and food products

Ireland has long been a country where markets and fair days have provided the backbone of the rural and urban economy. Though times have changed and few people are reliant on the ‘egg money’ they might have earned at the weekly market, in more affluent recent years there has been a resurgence in farmer’s markets and fairs.

Blessed with a climate and a landscape that provides fresh, local food in abundance, the green economy of Ireland is alive and thriving. Unlike the larger supermarkets in the cities, markets provide a welcome social experience, bringing together people who enjoy food with the producers and artisans responsible for its production.

The cornucopia of available goods available at your average Irish market is truly impressive, including seasonal Jams, dirty carrots, free range eggs, goat and sheep’s cheese and apple tarts, chutneys, olives, tarts, and breads. And there's an palpable atmosphere at Ireland's markets, from the sights, sounds, smells and tastes available. Ireland's market's are more than just places to buy produce. Artists share their crafts and buskers hammer out rousing riffs and heartfelt tunes. Ireland's market's appeals to all the senses. As a tourist experience, Ireland's markets are great place to mingle with locals engaged in a vital part of their weekly routine. But something is larger is at play. For Ireland's markets represent a thriving social movement, a forging of community as people stay in and support local economies.

Each week there are well over 100 markets are held across Ireland. Ireland Adventures has compiled a growing list of Ireland's best markets.
