Theatre by the Lake launched

Gougane Barra Hotel announced 2008 lineup for its Marquis Performances

Details have been announced for the 2008 program of "Theatre by the Lake," the enchanting theatre experience in the breathtaking valley of Gougane Barra in West Cork.

Launched by Neil and Katie Lucey, proprietors of Gougane Barra Hotel, Theatre by the Lake endeavors to bring professional high caliber theatre productions into the intimate and inspired marquis venue.

Now in its third year Theatre by the Lake has been a great success, embraced by locals accustomed to driving great distances for theatre of this caliber, as well as visitors who've traveled far and wide to partake in the unique and memorable hospitality experience.

This year's program features two popular productions and promises to be another sell out.

"Tom Crean, Antarctic Explorer" will come to Theatre by the Lake, headlining from the 15 July - 3 August. And back by popular demand, running from 12 - 31 August is "The Tailor and Antsy," the landmark production that inspired Theatre by the Lake to launch in 2005.

To fully enjoy "Theatre by the Lake", Guests are strongly advised to book as part of the Theatre Package, including two nights accommodation, dinner, theatre tickets and breakfasts.

Landing the acclaimed "Tom Crean" production affirms the appeal of "Theatre by the Lake." Written and performed by Aidan Dooley, Tom Crean, Antarctic Explorer is a one man production, vividly recounting the Crean's adventures to the South Pole.

Aidan Dooley masterfully inhabits the character, transporting audiences across the frozen tundra in the footsteps of Tom Crean, Ireland's great Antarctic explore who in the early 20th century heroically supported the great expeditions of Scott and Shackleton.

Produced by The Fairbanks Productions and Play on Words Theatre, this multi-award winning show has now played critically acclaimed sell-out performances throughout Ireland, USA, Australia, Europe and the UK. T

Guests are encouraged not to miss Tom Crean Antarctic Explorer, a show the Irish Times called the performance a "magnificent revelation of a fascinating character simply compels a standing ovation."

Back by popular demand is The Tailor and Antsy, the landmark production that launched Theatre by the Lake in 2005, running from 12 - 31 August.

The Tailor and Antsy recounts popular stories of a West Cork seanchaí and tailor Timothy Buckley, reflecting his own love of nature, raw vitality, humour and sexuality.

The Tailor and Antsy was a revived in the summer of 2005, playing at Gougane Barra to full houses for five weeks. The performances resonated with audiences keen to explore the plays roots.

Seeing in "The Tailor and Antsy" in Gougane Barra particularly poignant, as the marquee is set near the tiny graveyard where tailor Timothy Buckley and his wife Antsy are buried, and just down the road from the cottage where they lived.

The Tailor and Antsy was a seminal and controversial work in its time. Written by Eric Cross and published in 1942, The content was out of step with the mores of the time and created quite a stir. The senate in Dublin debated its content for four days, the book was subsequently banned and the couple were tragically ostracized by their own community.

The Tailor and Antsy will feature Ronan Wilmot as the Tailor and, as Antsy, Nuala Hayes, who also directs the show.

Ronan Wilmot (the Tailor) is a Director of The New Theatre, Dublin and has acted with The Abbey, The Gate, The Royal Shakespeare Company, The Liverpool Playhouse, The Royal Court, and The Young Vic.

Nuala Hayes is a well known actor and broadcaster and member of The Abbey Theatre Company for many years. She has performed with theatre companies in Ireland, the UK, Canada and the USA
